The Fokus: Idea competition includes films that surprise with their form and approach to the subject. Their authors often use well-known conventions to tell in an unusual way about problems and phenomena seemingly incompatible with a comedy or a musical. They prove that cinema doesn’t have to be just entertainment.

Slow, dir. Giovanni Boscolo, Daniele Nozzi (Italy) 2020, 10’, 13+
Since Marisa retired, she feels useless and abandoned. The meeting with a secret organization of pensioners reveals to her one of the greatest mysteries in the history of mankind: road traffic.

Ingbert, the sock, applies for a position as double bass player at the Vienna State Orchestra. Bad idea. Film awarded the Max Ophüls Preis.

The Earth is polluted, overpopulated and global warming is a real threat. For Jean-Claude and Maddy, there is only one solution: to leave it. But when a little alien comes along to save them, things don’t quite go as planned. Film presented at Clermont-Ferrand ISFF.

The Last Ferry from Grass Island, dir. Linhan Zhang (USA) 2020, 14’, 15+ A Hong Kong hitman retires as a fisherman on the peaceful Grass Island. One day, his Chinese apprentice shows up, tasked to kill him before the last ferry departs. Polish premiere. Special Mention of Tribeca FF.

After 30 years, Freek sees his imaginary childhood friend again. He really missed him.

Greetings from Nigeria, dir. Peter Hoferica (Slovakia) 2020, 17’, 15+
When grandpa Emil gets an email from the Nigerian Prince asking for financial help, he has no other choice (despite disapproval from the rest of the family), than send him the money. The Nigerian Prince promises not only his royal thankfulness, but also half of his heritage in return. Film awarded at Cottbus IFF.

The Flies, dir. Edgardo Pistone (Italy) 2020, 15’, 15+
Four guys are wandering around the town, making stupid jokes and talking about girls. Their carefree time ends the moment they learn the consequences of their actions. Film awarded at Venice IFF.
