Bait is a film about gentrification, capitalism, tourist tsunami and class conflicts.
A Cornish village, where the film takes place, undergoes a transformation from the fishing village to the seaside resort. The Ward brothers have to sell their house to Londoners who change the exterior by adding ropes, fishing nets and other elements which should symbolize ,,tradition’’ and ,,authenticity’’, so everything that tourists destroy.
Economic, social and cultural degradation of fishermen causes frustration which leads to the open war with arrogant and rich visitors. The conflict escalates when the young Ward starts to flirt with the daughter of Londoners – Miss Leigh. It is really hard not to think that Jenkin choose the names for his characters on purpose. Those names should recall the history of cinema. Even in such details the director stands on tradition site.
