Due to the elevator being out of order in the Centre for Culture building, events taking place on the first floor and in the basement are currently inaccessible to people with limited mobility.
Jia Zhangke, the Chinese master breaks with traditional storytelling and offers a phenomenal collage of songs, sounds, and landscapes that reflects the country’s transformation over the past 21 years.
The film centers on the turbulent relationship between Qiaoqiao (director Zhao Tao’s muse) and Bin (Zhubin Li) – a couple divided by priorities, economics, and distance. The film-maker is interested in both lost and unfulfilled individuals and the sweeping socioeconomic processes irrevocably changing the Middle Kingdom.
Jia Zhangke begins his journey in 2001 in Shanxi Province, where he was born and made his first films (including the renowned “Pickpocket” and “Platform”). He then heads toward the Three Gorges Dam, depicted in “Still Life”, before concluding the story with a return to the snowy north.
The director juggles references to his own work, openly engaging with it, and once again giving vent to his fascination with popular music. He relies sparingly on dialogue, staging the passage of time and the effects of modernization through more subtle means. The varying types and textures of imagery also symbolize the transformation of the medium itself.
“Caught by the Tides” thus becomes an erudite, meta-cinematic essay.
