In 1918, Edward, a British Empire official in Rangoon, flees from his fiancée Molly, who follows him on a grand journey across Asia.

The Portuguese director combines contemporary times with history, humour with melancholy, reflection on the colonial past with a fascination with Asian cultures. He takes us on a wild odyssey from Singapore, through Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, to Japan and China.

Here we find elements of silent film and shadow puppetry, as well as street plays, opera, and meditation – a truly fascinating mix. Gomes juggles conventions and switches languages, often leaving lost characters – “outsiders” – off-screen. Perhaps they are merely the ghosts of forgotten lovers? A cinema with soul, full of wonder at the world.
