Jojo Rabbit

18:00 - 11.04.2024 - free admission - more

It is a devisive film. On the one hand, the creators present a subversive satire criticizing fanaticism, and on the other hand, difficult issues related to World War II and genocide are presented in a form of a light comedy.

When a German boy (Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo) finds a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) who is hidden in the attic by his single mother (Scarlett Johansson), his world turns upside down. With only an idiotic imaginary friend by his side, none other than Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi), Jojo must now confront his blind nationalism.

Series: Master and apprentice

What would cinema be without the master-appretice relationship? Adonis Creed would not have reached the championship title if it wasn’t for the help of his father’s old friend, Rocky Balboa, and he would not have gone down a similar path if it had not been for his coach Paulie Pennino. A certain Obi Wan Kenobi was Qui Gon Jin’s student himself for a while, and later took care of two generations of Skywalkers, with varying results as we know perfectly well from films. A class of the elite school of “Dead Poets Society” wouldn’t enter the deep waters of poetry if it wasn’t for the guidance by Captain John Keating. In the April series, we focus on such relationships, although sometimes taking on a slightly different perspsctive. In “Jojo Rabbit”, the boy is fascinated by his imaginary friend Adolf Hitler, not realizing the dangers behind his ideas. In “May December”, actress Elizabeth Berry carefully examines the woman she is to play in her next film. In “Club Zero” authority of a dietitian influences her students, and their eating disorders. In Sorentino’s “Youth”, many masters would like to become disciples again. All the screening of the “Master and apprentice” series will be followed by discussions which, rest assusred, will take place on equal terms.

The project is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute

We would like to remind our audience that the Centre for Culture’s Cinema runs according to the creed “Cinema, not popcorn”, which means that we focus on advertising-free screenings. The showtimes in our cinema are equivalent to the start of the film screening. Please arrive on time. According to the regulations, late arrivals will not be admitted to the screenings.
