Jonas Åkerlund (i.a. the drummer of Bathory, director of the music clips for The Prodigy, Rammstein and Madonna) stage-managed a brilliant and provocarive work.
Oslo, year 1987. Seventeen year-old Øystein Aarseth, also known as Euronymous (excellent role of Rory Culkin) is determined to run away from his undisturbed Scandinavian home town, and with his band Mayhem create the „true Norse black metal”. Dead and Varg, two equally fanatic peers join him. They believe that they are on the verge of a music revolution and it makes them even more darker. Satan’s worship, arson of churches, theft of tombstones, depression, suicides, tendencies to publicity, those are just some of the elements of their daily life.
„Lords of Chaos” is not just about Mayhem and the black metal music scene between 1988 – 1993. It is also a story about the tragic and fascinating relationship between Euronymous and Varg Vikernes (played by the terrifying Emory Cohen). It is a complex and visually robust story about people filled with passion, that takes the viewers on a rigid, emotional and psychological journey. It is a movie for black metal heads and everyone that dares to dream, who stumbles upon hardship of life and understands the strong urge to leave a mark behind.
