Małgorzata Pawlak and Mikołaj Kowalski are an artistic duo from Lublin. They both graduated from Painting at the Faculty of Art of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University. In their creative activities they undertake various formal experiments and use many means of artistic expression. Yet for each of them painting remains the basic way of describing and examining reality. Although they create separate works, their joint exhibitions are an artistic dialogue in which individual statements take the form of material objects: paintings, sculptures, installations. The topics usually refer to the couple’s interests, lifestyle, and interests: nature, art, amateur scientific experiments.
The “Little Things” are unimportant matters: dust from the studio, small, seemingly uninteresting manifestations of urban nature, things that are hard to notice and yet can become a source of inspiration for a careful observer, a pretext for asking questions and gaining knowledge about the world. Meticulousness, usually considered a flaw, may be useful in a world of endless stimuli, in which we tend to form judgments quickly, but unfortunately superficially. The world is moving at great speed, but not necessarily in the right direction. The exhibition presents painting series which were created in the years 2018-2024 during the artists’ Ph.D. studies in Humanities and Art.
