“Mystery Train” has the structure of a puzzle, a scattered one, in which the full picture is created in the viewer’s head.
The action of the film, made of seemingly independent episodes, takes place in a run-down Arkada hotel in Memphis, Tennessee; Elvis Presley’s home town. This is where the heroes of the story stop for a moment: two Japanese tourists, travelling in the footsteps of their musical idols; An Italian woman who lost her husband in the United States, and an American who just broke up with her English boyfriend. Their paths will cross for a moment and will hear the sound of a gunshot in the background. Everyone will also be haunted by the ghost of Elvis. Instead of immortalizing worship and love for an idol, we see only his desperate desire for a resurrection.
As usual, Jarmusch is not about action, story, or conflicts. On the contrary – the director ostentatiously shows the lack of conflicts or their appearance, nothing is happening or it is happening without meaning and punch lines. Contrary to earlier films, however, in which human actions and gestures were the most important, the main character of “Mystery Train” is time. Jarmusch is fascinated by the possibility of showing simultaneous events in the cinema. However, like his other works, it also impresses with a cast of actors and underground stars. The paths of actor Steve Buscemi, Joe Strummer (leader of The Clash), New York director Sara Driver, performer and musician Screamin Jay Hawkins, and blues legend Rufus Thomas crossed on the screen.
