This workshop would like to open a discussion on the way we perceive world-wide admired art and if it still serves us.
Nowadays, Paris museum reinvents its Pablo Picasso exhibit to assuage ‘controversy’ over artist’s alleged troubled past to bring back younger generations that have concerns with the Spanish artist. In 1989 the Guerilla Girls designed a billboard for PAF in New York, highlighting inequality in art by the fact that ‘less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female’, The billboard was rejected due to being too provocative. One of the most famous works of Ai Weiwei ‘*Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn’* (the Han period is one of the most defining in the history of Chinese civilization) refers to the period of destroying the previous culture in order to move on and create a new culture. This workshop would like to open a discussion on the way we perceive world-wide admired art and if it still serves us. Should we divide the art and the artist? Does the art of the past still moves us? Can the classical motifs be problematic? And how do we deal with unpleasant past?
The workshop is part of the educational and exhibition project “On the Verge of Destruction”, which aims to discuss the canon of art and the myths that shroud it presented in an interactive and open way to the viewer. The creator of the series is Lana Talkachova. It is held as part of the Art is Youth program implemented at the Center for Culture in Lublin.
About artist:
Nowadays I’m preparing diploma at UMCS university in Graphic Design specialization. My whole life I was interested in socio-political questions in different fields, but I’ve never used my artistic skills to talk about them. Moving to Poland and studying here for more than a year, I met people who made me feel more free to share my views and encouraged me to apply my art knowledge to that. This exhibition is my step forward to inner freedom from the barriers of the past.
