“Past lives” is a love story which redefines the rules of on-screen romance with lightness and charm, making viewers of Sundance, Berlinale and fans of the A24 studio fall in love with it.

It is a thoroughly modern film that heals broken hearts, gives a chance for love, reconciles the past with the future, teaches us to part without anger and with hope for a new beginning. It achieves the impossible: it makes you fall in love with each of the three characters. In-Yun is a Korean belief that people become closer to each other because their souls met in previous incarnations. Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) grew up together in South Korea. Separated by fate as children, they find each other years later thanks to social media. Finally, their love and migration odyssey will take them both to New York. Nora is already married and Hae Sung is newly single. “What if?” – this question keeps pounding in their heads. And also in the head of Nora’s husband (John Magaro), surprised by the sudden visit of the Korean. “Past lives” evokes the spirit of Richard Linklater’s trilogy and the best New York film stories. The story stretched between New York and Seoul, modern technology and the longed-for touch, memories and the present, accompanied by echoes of Buddhist reflection on destiny and the spiritual dimension of relationships.

This reference is not accidental: the director of “Past lives” comes from South Korea. Celine Song based her magical debut, another hit from the A24 studio, hailed by American critics as “the best film of the year” around her own memories. The result is an extraordinary story about love, lost hopes and new opportunities. And that elusive longing for the previous life that each of us carries within us.

Series: Benshi’s predictions
Does anyone needs explaining what the annual Academy Awards gala, the Oscars, is about? Just in case, we would like to explain: The Oscars are a long-standing tradition of presenting film awards in many categories, celebrated at the legendary gala in Los Angeles. The greatest emotions are connected with the choice of the best film, actress/actor and film script of the past year. With the nominations announcements open discussions and speculations about potential winners in individual categories. The Oscar list includes several unique titles that are worth checking out. The nominees in all categories have been announced on January 23, but Benshi already has their picks. In February, we will present our selection of this year’s Oscar list, or rather – variations on it. We go back to the classic productions by directors topping this year’s list. Beginning with “Nebraska” (2013) by Alexander Payne, this year nominee for “Holdovers”. Then we will return to “Memento” (2000) by Christopher Nolan, whose “Oppenheimer” brok many records last year. The next film is Celine Song’s feature-length debut – “Past Lives” (2023).. The Oscar list would also be incomplete without the film “Poor Creatures” (2023) directed by Yórgos Lánthimos. At the end of the Oscar cycle, we have for you a slightly dusty gem from Martin Scorsese – “After Hours” from 1985. His “Killers of the Flower Moon” is competing with “Oppenheimer” to become the biggest winner of this year’s awards. When we start this cycle, we will know how wrong we were, but maybe we will score something. Do you, our dear viewers, have your own Oscar picks? Let’s make bets!

Join in the discussion on the programme we prepare.

The project is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute
