Symcha Keller and Friends: The Hasidic Way. From Lublin to Kock
The last person continuing the musical, mystical tradition of Hasidim in Poland – cantorSymcha Keller, proposes a journey into the world of Hasidic mysticism who used to live in Central and Eastern Europe.
Europe.Original and classically arranged songs will restore the atmosphere of 18th-century Jewish shtetls. Symcha Keller was initially taught to lead prayers from the chief cantor of the Łódź synagogue, Izaak Froimowski. In the years 1989-93 he travelled to Israel and the USA many times, where he studied with Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, among others. After his death in 1994, he returned to Poland and recorded the album “Szabes”, and then “Song of songs”. He was also involved in the reconstruction of Jewish life in Poland. For many years he was the cantor of the Union of Jewish Communities. He led prayers during many world-class ceremonies, including visits of Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, US President Bill Clinton and Vaclav Havel, and anniversary celebrations, e.g. the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Symcha Keller’s prayers are based on a traditional, mystical musical setting. They place great emphasis on Hasidic music, by anonymous composers from small towns that were centres of Hasidism in the 18th and 19th centuries. The artist performs all the time, presenting the Hasidic music, which is so different from the popular, klezmer, music. In 2017 he recorded the double album “Bramy”, which he dedicated to the memory of his first master, Icchak Frojmowski. In 2019, another CD with Hasidic mystical songs was released, entitled “Chojze – The Seers of Lublin”. This album is dedicated to one of the greatest Hasidic mystics in Poland, who died in 1815. In December 2021, another album was released, “Chasydzka Droga, from Lublin to Kock”. It contains originally arranged Hassidic songs from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is a collection of three CDs focused in particular on Hasidic mysticism from Eastern Europe. Symcha Keller is arabbi, cantor and activist of the Jewish community. Former Chairman of the Religious Council of the Union of Jewish Religious Communities in the Republic of Poland and former chairman of the Jewish Religious Community in Łódź.
