The winner of the Venice Film Festival, “The Room Next Door”, brings together two great personalities and movie stars on screen: Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton.
Pedro Almodóvar’s melodrama is an emotional story about goodbyes, fulfilment, motherhood and family of choice, and above all – about living on your own terms. The Spaniard’s English-language debut opens a completely new chapter in his work, while maintaining the director’s characteristic humour, melancholy and seductive splendour of costumes and interiors. An explosion of vivid colors celebrates life in both its joyful and bitter guises, and is a tribute to friendship, whose glow can soothe any pain.
Almodóvar set the action of “The Room Next Door” on the East Coast of the USA. It is in New York that old friends meet: the successful writer Ingrid (Moore) and Martha (Swinton), a war reporter who is currently fighting the most important battle of her life. They were separated by professional and personal choices, and a fate that one does not choose will bring them back together. In dramatic circumstances, Ingrid and Martha will see a chance to experience something together again.
One of Pedro Amodóvar’s most highly rated films is the screen version of “The Fullness of Love”, a novel by Sigrid Nunez. “In the Room Next Door” is a therapeutic, hopeful film that is not ashamed to move and believe: in the healing power of presence and relationships that are resistant to the passage of time.
