A sea captain makes a bet with his friend that he will marry the first woman to enter the cafe.
The Dutchman Jakob Störr is the captain of the shipping. One of his friends suggests that a good solution for the protagonist would be a marriage that would allow him to settle down. Spending time at a fancy Parisian café, Störr decides to marry the first woman to cross the threshold.
That person turns out to be a beautiful, distinguished Lizzie. When the man comes to her table and talks about his intentions, she is initially a bit embarrassed. To everyone’s surprise, however, she decides to accept this surprising offer. The happiness of the married couple does not last long, however. Jakob has to return to the ship, where he feels much more confident than in the Parisian salons. The frequent absence of a man and a long separation do not affect the mutual relations of the spouses in the best way, especially when the wealthy writer Dedin appears in the surroundings of a single woman.
