In 1871, the famous French poet Paul Velaine received several poems by a man named Arthur Rimbaud.

This poetry shaken Paul deeply. He decides to invite the young poet to his place. From the very first meeting, it is clear to him that Rimbaud is not only a talented boy with literary aspirations, but a real genius, endowed with an amazing sensitivity to art and remaining beyond all the conventions of bourgeois life. Verlaine’s admiration is not only literary, but turns into a homosexual fascination that inspires both of them.

The screening will be followed by a discussion.

Cycle: Directors
Few people know that one of the pioneers of cinema along with the brothers Lumiere and Georges Melies, was the director Alice Guy-Blaché. Her film “The Fairy of the Cabbages” is considered to be one of the first plots (“Tables Turned on the Gardener” was written less than a year earlier, but Guy-Blaché’s plot was more extensive). Women have always been present in the history of cinema,. It’s worth mentioning the contribution of Agnés Varda to the French New Wave, Věra Chytilova in the Czech New Wave and Wanda Jakubowska, who rebuilt Polish cinematography after the war. However, if we look into the number of awards, women’s successes are unfairly small in comparison to the achievements of their male counterparts. In the 93-year history of the Oscars, only 7 women received a nomination for directing, and the award went only to Kathryn Bigelow and Chloé Zhao (Jane Campion has a good chance this year, this is her second nomination). In March, we decided to present the profiles of five outstanding female directors with a wide variety of costume films by Sofia Coppola, Agnieszka Holland, Jane Campion and Andrea Arnold and Kathryn Bigelow which will prove that fantastic sensational cinema is not only the domain of men.

The project is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.
