The exhibition prepared by Justyna Polakowska to mark the writer’s 100th birthday presents Leopold Tyrmand as a jazz lover.
Leopold Tyrmand – an excellent popularizer of jazz music, saw jazz as a perfect symbol of rebellion against the restrictions imposed on individual freedom in various political systems. Tyrmand also pointed to plebeian sources of jazz music, drawing from urban folklore. Therefore, the images of Warsaw in the 1950s are an illustration of the quoted texts. In the exhibition consisting of 13 panels, excerpts from the books “Zły”, “At the edges of jazz”, “On Freedom” by Leopold Tyrmand, “Zły Tyrmand” by Mariusz Urbanek, as well as interviews and articles that were published in Jazz Forum were used. The illustrations are based on archival photographs.
