A film by Kantemir Bałagow – the Russian director of the younger generation, the pupil of Aleksander Sokurov, was a revelation of last year’s festival in Cannes.
The story is set in the areas of the northern Caucasus at the end of the 1990s. Ilana is an illegitimate child of a strict mother, brought up by a caring stepfather. Seemingly it is a happy Jewish family, but the heroine does not adhere to it. Her boyfriend is a Kabardian – it means that they can not see each other and their relationship will not be accepted.
Ilana tries to escape the restrictions. She is looking for freedom, which, however, is impossible to achieve. An electrifying, sometimes brutal, sometimes controversial debut of the 26-year-old is the harbinger of a new, unique film talent.
