A Tale of Three Sisters

A sleepy, fairy-tale village in the mountains of central Anatolia.

Poverty now dominates where a mine once flourished. Which is why the widowed patriarch of a family sends his daughters to the city, where they work in a disappearing profession known as belsame, i.e., as adopted sisters who take care of the children of wealthy families. Each of the three girls—20-year-old Reyhan, 16-year-old Nurhan and 13-year-old Havva—is entirely unique and brings home different stories. In time, they are all sent back from the city. The youngest when the child entrusted to her dies, the middle sister because of her recalcitrance, and the oldest to get married. Now, with the whole family together again, previously suppressed secrets and desires come to the surface. In his latest film, Emin Alper, the director of Beyond the Hill and Frenzy, paints a picture of a magical land based on his own memories, while describing the character of the Turkish provinces and, above all, the world of human emotions.
