On October 18, 1941, John Huston’s first film “Maltese Falcon” initiates the so-called black series. The main actor, Humphrey Bogart, is launched to international fame with this film.
Detectives Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) and Miles Archer (Jerome Cowan) are engaged by Mrs. O’Shaughnessy (Mary Astor) to find a certain Fred Thursby who allegedly disappeared with her sister. Archer dies mysteriously, and Thursby’s body will be found soon. Spade’s cynical loner, having an affair with Archer’s wife, tries to explain the murders himself. He discovers that O’Shaughnessy belongs to an international circle of criminals who are looking for an extremely valuable statue of a falcon. Spade eventually gets a falcon for himself and breaks up the gang. He also reveals that Thursby’s killer is the unscrupulous Mrs. O’Shaughnessy. Spade hands it over to the police, even though he was captivated by it. Spade, convincingly played by Bogart, embodies the man of justice; alone, despite numerous obstacles, he solves a complicated puzzle.
