The true story of Amin, who is forced to reveal his past at the beginning of his marriage.
Amin Nawabi (pseudonym), a 36-year-old ambitious scientist, plans to move in with his long-time partner Casper and marry him. But something is holding him back; Amin still postpones the decision and disappears on further foreign delegations.
Jonas, a documentary film-maker, Amin’s friend, cannot understand this behavior, and wonders if the answers should be sought in Amin’s past experiences. Although they have known each other since his teenage years, when Amin came alone to Jonas’ town, Amin revealed very little about where he came from and how he ended up in Denmark. Now, twenty years later, realizing that the trauma is blocking him, Amin decides to share his story with Jonas so that he can finally move on and live on.
A series of interviews with Amin reveal that in the 1990s he and his family fled Afghanistan from the mujahideen. They found refuge in Moscow for a while, but then they were forced to go into hiding when their tourist visa expired. “Survive” follows the fate of little Amin and his family, their constant dramatic efforts to find shelter in Europe, and tells the story of how the adult Amin struggles with distrust and fear of closeness, sabotaging the life he is trying to build with his future husband.
