Atanas Valkov, a composer and pianist from Lublin, will refer to his Bulgarian roots in an ethno-jazz programme prepared specially to mark the 15th anniversary of the Multicultural Lublin Festival.

The second day of the festival is a meeting with the music of the Balkans and the Orient. Atanas Valkov is an outstanding composer and pianist, who was born in Lublin. The musician, who has been awarded many times for music created for series, films, theatre performances, prepared a concert combining ethnic and jazz music especially with Multicultural Lublin in mind. He will be accompanied by Krystian Majderdrut (drums, percussion instruments), Jacek Mazurkiewicz (double bass) and Jan Michalec (trumpet).

Atanas Valkov – composer, pianist, multi-instrumentalist, music producer. An artist with Bulgarian roots, he grew up in Lublin, where he also began his musical education. A composer looking for inspiration in the multicultural sounds. In his works, he often combines the classical piano sounds with ethno-sounds, jazz and electronics. Known primarily as a composer of music for TV series and films. He collaborated with Andrzej Wajda, Tomasz Bagiński and Jan P. Matuszyński, among others. Together with Kayah he created and produced the Transoriental Orchestra. Winner of the 7th edition of the Berlinale, winner of the award for the best Polish soundtrack for music to the TV series “Król” during the Film Music Festival in 2021.

Krystian Majderdrut – drummer, music producer. For many years he played in Piotr Bukartyk’s band. He also collaborated with Patrycja Kosiarkiewicz and Iwona Węgrowska.

Jacek Mazurkiewicz – double bass player, composer, producer, performer, music teacher. An artist looking for new sounds, new possibilities in music. He composes music for films and theatre performances. He collaborated with Mikołaj Trzaska, Staszek Soyka, Daniel Levin and Rob Brown, among others. He took part in the production of over 40 music albums.

Jan Michalec – a musician from Lublin, whose basic instrument is the trumpet. Arranger, composer, pianist. He is inspired by the works of Miles Davis, Keith Jarret and John Coltrane. He also reaches for electronic sounds. Jan Michalec is one of the most talented and most original Polish trumpeters, who brings out unimaginable sounds from the trumpet. He finds himself excellently in free jazz, as well as in the Balkan gypsy stream. You can hear him, among others, in the soundtrack of the Belfer series, for which he recorded amazing solo parts.

 

The project is carried out as part of the Art Spaces Lublin program, financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, implemented by the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatere Institute and the National Institute of Music and Dance. The local operator of the project is the Centre for Culture in Lublin.
