They ran away from the gloomy province, which mostly offers black girls humiliation into fantasies of writing fame, romantic love and pools full of Pepsi-Cola exploding with neon colors, drenched by sunlight. But June and Jennifer’s teenage imaginations, twisted by hormones, also have a dark side – and so does their bond of competition. Girl cannot live without each other or together, and whose teenage rebellion has spiraled out of control. Smoczyńska’s film can be read as a study of a toxic bond, artistic genius or female rebellion. Maybe it is a story of an escape from a racist society, or maybe a ballad about impossible love?
