A sharp tongue, monochromatic image, music video shots. Black trans women are funny – the director of “Kokomo City”, D. Smith is one of them.
Destroying the martyrological pattern through which trans women’s stories are usually told, she talks about the inextricable knot of gender and race, not only in relationships with men, but also between daughters and mothers who have to come to terms with the “loss” of their sons. Daniella Carter, Dominique Silver, Liyah Mitchell and Koko Da Doll are flesh and blood characters, talking about boys, family, sex, sex work, dreams and problems without unnecessary censorship. “Kokomo City” exudes honesty and the life experience of black, trans women, giving them a voice.
From the resonant statements of the protagonists, the director builds a sincere image, full of energy and life experience, which, however, has its tragic epilogue – shortly after the film’s success at the Sundance Festival, Da Doll was shot dead in her native Atlanta.
