“Queer,” the latest film from Luca Guadagnino (“Call Me by Your Name,” “I Am Love,” “Challengers”), transports viewers to a world of untamed desires, shamanic rituals, and sensual, wild nature. The protagonists are two Americans: the statuesquely beautiful, young Gene Allerton (the magnetic Drew Starkey) and the older William Lee (Daniel Craig), who struggles with addiction and loneliness.

Daniel Craig, who rose to fame as Bond, delivers his boldest performance yet in Guadagnino’s film. The actor brings out both the magnetic eroticism and the tragic ridiculousness of a mature man who has fallen in love as a teenager. Together with Starkey, they form an electrifying duo: one is elusive, cool, and beautiful, the other insatiable, hungry for emotion, and consumed by erotic fever. The protagonists, American expats, meet in 1950s Mexico and embark on a trance-like journey that will take them all the way to the Ecuadorian jungle.

This film adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s iconic novel extracts all the visual splendor and sensual beauty from the literature, while also offering insightful political commentary. A satire of a prudish and hypocritical America intertwines with the most intense on-screen romance in recent years.

A captivating soundtrack completes the picture. The music for “Queer” was composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Oscar-winners for “The Social Network”), and one of their new songs is performed by Brazilian singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso. The soundtrack also features hits by Sinéad O’Connor, Nirvana, Prince, and New Order. Every note and every song in this film tells the story of a wild, unrequited love that’s like a drug—it’s addictive and leaves you constantly wanting more—but one that everyone would love to experience at least once.
