Who is Donnie Darko? At school, he’s a teenage outsider. At home, he’s a boy struggling with mental health issues. In his dreams, he’s a chosen one visited by a large, dark rabbit named Frank.
The rabbit claims the world will end soon. And when his dreams begin to intrude on reality, Donnie is faced with larger-than-life questions: about time, fate, and the nature of the entire world.
“Donnie Darko” is a plunge down a rabbit hole. It’s a cinematic puzzle that incorporates time travel, a Lynchian look at American suburbia, high-school drama, a parody of coaching, physics, philosophy, the social unrest of the turn of the millennium, and “Alice in Wonderland.”
It’s a mystery as much as its director, Richard Kelly, who, after his brilliant debut, made two more equally strange films—and then fell silent. It was also a breakthrough role for Jake Gyllenhaal, who was 20 at the time of filming, who, as Donnie Darko, first demonstrated his talent for creating ambiguous, complex characters.
“Donnie Darko” is a cult classic, a textbook example of a cult classic. The film lost at its theatrical release, only to eventually gain legions of devoted fans who, in the early internet era, dissected the film’s most minute aspects on forums, trying to answer the question: what was it all about? The mystery of “Donnie Darko” also fascinated Polish filmgoers, despite its lack of distribution in Poland.
The film is being released in Poland on the 25th anniversary of its world premiere.
