Christopher Nolan’s debut film – for the first time in Polish cinemas. See the birth of one of the most important contemporary directors.

Nolan's feature-length directorial debut is a manifesto of his future cinema: labyrinthine narrative, an obsession with control, and a fascination with the fluid nature of identity. Shot on a shoestring budget (a mere $6,000!), in black and white, utilizing natural light and the London apartments of the director's friends, "Following" remains one of the most striking examples of independent cinema of the 1990s.

The film's protagonist, an unnamed young writer, begins following random people on the streets of London, using them as material for his observations. However, what begins as an innocent fascination quickly turns into a dangerous ritual when he meets the charismatic burglar Cobb—a guide through a world of manipulation, self-performing, and moral disorientation. Nolan leads the viewer through a series of seemingly unrelated events, breaking down the linearity of the story and forcing the viewer to constantly reconstruct reality.

This early film already reveals all the themes that would later define the work of the director of "Memento," "Inception," and "Oppenheimer": fragmented memory, a distrust of perception, characters trapped within the constructs of their own minds, and time treated as a tool for dramatic manipulation. "Following" functions as a blueprint for Nolan's future style, yet remains an incredibly raw and intimate work—an urban noir about loneliness, obsession, and the desire to take control of others' lives.

This is cinema born from constraints: a lack of budget, time, and technical resources. It is precisely thanks to this ascetic form that "Following" retains its exceptional intensity and almost documentary-like proximity to the London setting of the late 1990s. The film depicts the birth of one of the most important contemporary directors not as a spectacular debut, but as a precisely constructed narrative experiment in which each scene becomes part of a larger puzzle.

The film will be presented in a digitally restored version of image and sound, personally supervised by Christopher Nolan.
