This is the new film by award-winning documentary filmmaker Tomasz Wolski, who weaves a light-hearted narrative – marked by humour and absurdity – about a pivotal moment in the history of Poland and the world, resonating with both the past and the present.
Martial law, which was imposed in Poland on 13 December 1981, targeted the Solidarity movement, but it had other faces, too. On the basis of exclusively archival footage, the film explores the backstage of the past events. It undermines the mythicised image of Polish society as a victim of the system.
The film is the winner of the Krakow Film Festival. This found-footage production, brimming with energy and absurdity, features previously unreleased recordings from state archives, including footage from the rehearsal of General Jaruzelski’s famous address to the nation.
