Series: Hotel
July and August – two holiday months for rest and visiting new places. An element that connects both activities is hotel – a place where you can rest while travelling. Film characters frequently stay at hotels, and their atmosphere is often used to as an engine for action in the film. Both the motel from “Psycho” by Alfred Hitchcock, and the hotel from “The Shining” by Stanley Kubrick, cut off from the world by bad weather conditions, were filled with an atmosphere of evil. The boredom of the Japanese Park Hyatt Hotel helped Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray communicate in Sofia Coppola’s famous film. Elsewhere, the splendour, pastel colours and symmetry of the Grand Budapest Hotel became the basis of Wes Anderson’s original style. In our series, we take a look at two new productions whose action take place in hotels. In “Dream Scenario,” Nicholas Cage plays a college professor who, for some unexplained reason, has dreams about millions of strangers. Moving to Finland, a romance between a supermarket employee and an alcohol-addicted worker in Aki Kaurismaki’s latest production entitled “Falling Leaves”. Finally, we will remind to classic of German expressionism, “The Porter of the Hotel Atlantic” by F. W. Murnau, shown to mark the 100th anniversary of the film. The screening of this film will take place in the Benshi Special format, which is our original project. During the screening we will tell interesting facts about the production, and the viewer’s task is to decide whether they were true or false.. So, this holiday season, don’t forget to visit Hotel Benshi.
