A strong and moving story about interpersonal bonds and the magic of cinema, set in the realities of a seaside town in England in the early 1980s.
Hilary (Olivia Colman) works in the beautiful, though time-worn Empire cinema. She is overwhelmed by numerous problems, and in addition she has an unhealthy relationship with her boss, to say the least. Unexpectedly, hope for a better tomorrow is poured into her heart with the arrival of Stephen (Micheal Ward) – a new, young employee who reminds her that life can be beautiful. Although both of them have to deal with their demons on a daily basis.
The strength of the film is its all-star cast, led by Oscar winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Daughter), BAFTA winner Micheal Ward (Blue Story, Top Boy) and Oscar® winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, A Single Man). It is also another production on which Mendes collaborates with Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins (1917, Skyfall).
