The name Tołhaje means a robbers prowling in the Beskids in Hungarian. The band, like the former tołhaje, beskidnicy, prowl the folk music scene, mixing styles and genres, creating unique arrangements of folk songs.
The band was founded in 2000 by Janusz Demkowicz and Damian Kurasz. In their work, the group draws inspiration from the cultural borderland of south-eastern Poland – especially from the traditions of ethnic groups living in the Bieszczady Mountains: Lemkos and Boykos.
In June 2002, the group represented Poland at the XXIII Festival of the European Broadcasting Union – EBU, in Mölln (Germany). They also visited Africa as representatives of Poland, at the Festival of European Music in Algiers. From autumn 2013, the band collaborated on the soundtrack to the series "WATAHA", the latest HBO production. As a result of this cooperation with HBO, another album of the
band, entitled "Czereda", was released in 2014,on which, in addition to the songs used in the series, recordings from a live concert, accompanied by a string orchestra were published.
The band are:
Damian Kurasz – guitars
Janusz Demkowicz – bass guitar
Tomasz Duda – soprano and baritone saxophones, clarinet
Lukasz Moskal – drums
Maria Kulik – vocals
Piotr Rychlec – accordion, keys, whistle, overtone singing
Maciej Cierliński – hurdy-gurdy
Project co-financed from a subsidy of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration.
The event is part of the program of the European Youth Capital Lublin 2023
