Sewn memories

There is always a strong bond between grandmothers and grandchildren, and the bedtime stories become etched permanently in human memory and constitute a beautiful background of our memories.

The voice of a person closest to the child and the beginning of a new journey through imagination create the simplest and most valued moments. The idea of the project is to build this experience again in order to keep the inherited repertoire and honour all grandmothers who aroused children’s imagination, and those who have never felt this pleasure. The project consists of choosing, visualizing and photographing a history, and then weaving it on a canvas, which will become the basis of inherited stories.

About the workshops:
Creative workshops taking place in the framework of Noura Alsouma’s project My Grandmother’s Quilt are intended for people who do not speak
Arabic. Participants will be introduced to the world of Arabic language in a simplified form, and then learn about the Arab alphabet. The purpose of the workshop is to draw attention to the shape of Arab letters as a form of art. The starting point will be two words: حب and ،
دفا, meaning love and warmth. Each person will work with letters on the fabric, in relation to the chosen bedtime story. Individual designs will become part of a work of art combining fibre and graphics. Lublin workshops are the first instalment of the artist’s activities, the next one will take place in Berlin in March 2023.
