“We are klezmer, that’s why we mainly improvise, constantly looking for something new, also in ourselves. Improvisation is a gate through which the worlds of our souls go straight to those who want to explore these worlds. We want our music to be simply called the Kroke music.”

Kroke (in Yiddish: Cracow) was formed in 1992 by three friends: Tomasz Kukurba, Jerzy Bawoł and Tomasz Lato. As graduates of Academy of Music in Cracow, but also as artists in the search, they did not abstain from experimenting with jazz and contemporary music. The band, initially associated with Klezmer music, currently oscillates around various genres.

Kroke is also one of the first bands to go out with their music to the public. The musicians could be found on the streets and in the clubs of Cracow’s Kazimierz district, once the Jewish part of the city. The musical compositions they played, completely unknown for some, in others woke up the memories of the world which has been long forgotten. It was there, when you could first hear the songs that appeared in 1993 on the band’s first music cassette issued at their own expense.

During the recording of the album “Chojze – Seer of Lublin”, every effort was made to ensure that its character and sound were as close to the source as possible. All the songs performed during the concert at Fara Square are original Hasidic niguns from the 17th and 19th centuries, and some of them date back to the Middle Ages. The instruments used on the album are classical, no electric instruments were used. Drums were abandoned in favour of traditional drums in order to obtain the sound closest to the original.

The band:
Symcha Keller – singing, flute, shofar
Bartłomiej Stańczyk – accordion, singing
Robert Brzozowski – double bass
Krzysztof Pachla – clarinet
Paweł Stępnik – guitars
Tomasz “Bozdek” Kozdraj – percussion instruments
Marcin David Król – violin
