When 29-year-old biology student Rona returns to Orkney after more than a decade, her childhood memories merge with the years spent in London. Rona takes the viewers back to the time when she got lost in the Hackney party scene and fell in love with Daynina. Alcohol gradually took over her life and Rona lost everything and everyone she cared about. Now sober but lonely and isolated from the world around her, she lives with her religious mother and helps her father, who suffers from bipolar disorder, on the sheep farm where she grew up.

Stuck in a spiral of shame and regret, Rona tries to find stability in her new routine, while suppressing the memories of what happened to her in London. She decides to isolate herself on the small island. Surrounded only with wind, darkness and bitterly cold sea, she finds comfort and joy among the small community. The Outrun is a moving examination of alcoholism, starring a standout performance by Saoirse Ronan.
