A story about a family struggling to reunite after a breakup.
Peter (Hugh Jackman) lives with his new partner Beth (Vanessa Kirby) and their young son. His life is stable and comfortable. However, that changes when his ex-wife Kate (Laura Dern) shows up with their first son, Nicholas (McGrath), now in his teens. It turns out that Nicholas has been absent from school for months, he is restless, distant and angry.
Peter tries to take care of Nicholas the way he would like his own father (Anthony Hopkins) to take care of him. At the same time, he has to manoeuvrer at work, where the offer of his dream position in Washington appears. Peter, reaching back to the past to fix his mistakes,
loses sight of what matters most.
