Ferrara’s portrait of the artist in his old age is one of the most honest and moving films about man – one of the most outstanding productions of recent years.
Played by Willem Dafoe, Tommaso is a screen alter ego of the director himself. It is impossible to find out where the script ends, and something like psychodrama begins. We witness the deconstruction of toxic masculinity – with its aggression, jealousy, sexual frustrations and addictions. Tommaso fights with his demons, and above all, with a powerful ego.
