Rohmerian in spirit, but bearing the strong mark of Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s style, the film consists of three short stories, each of which revolves around the question of chance.
Fortune – as you know – turns on a wheel, and it is no different in the film of the Japanese film maker. The film’s protagonists keep returning: to the completed romance, a mistake from the past, the town where they had their first love. But it is also a journey towards a growing sense of weirdness. The film that starts out like a classic moral story slowly moves towards science fiction. The author spins the wheel of fortune with masterful skill, and the scenes made mainly in the interiors – each with the participation of two actors – are phenomenal, nuanced portraits of the relationship. Brilliant observations and a discreet sense of humour are accompanied by a sadness that makes Hamaguhi’s film a silent sigh over wasted opportunities and our imperfection.
