A unique evening of contemporary Polish music, featuring the acclaimed, award-winning Spółdzielnia Muzyczna Contemporary Ensemble performing works by Rafał Ryterski.
The concert offers a fascinating journey across the boundaries of acoustic sound, electronics, multimedia, and socially engaged art.
Programme:
• “Birdsongs” (subtitled: motion picture soundtrack for a TV documentary) is a stage piece with a duration of approximately 30 minutes for 8 performers, electronics performed partly live and partly from audio playback, and video. The piece is inspired by bird migrations, which are treated here as a metaphor for adaptation and necessary changes in human life, both in the individual context and in the context of the entire civilization. There were few inspirational anchors, like “Flights” (“Bieguni”) by Olga Tokarczuk, “When the body says no” by Gabor Mate, “Nightjar” by Cosmo Sheldrake and a beautiful documentary “The Secret Routes of Birds Migration”.
The form of this work is a hybrid – it mixes theatre with documentary, new music with drum machines and sequenced synthesisers, darkness with humour, philosophy with science-fiction. That is why Birdsongs is reminiscing a radio show, or a performative lecture.
• “Disco Bloodbath (Got to be real)” is a piece commissioned by the Warsaw Autumn Festival, and has been premiered by Black Page Orchestra on 26th September 2018. It is a 16 minutes long collage of different melodies, harmonies, rhythms, beats and even songs. Its subtitle comes from the song by Cheryl Lynn.
This work is inspired by two very different phenomenona: ballroom culture and gaming society. Those two completely different societies have a very important thing in common – identity freedom, especially when it comes to gender. In the ballroom/drag scene gender is something very fluid, flexible. In the gaming world, gender is something that is not important as far as you’re a good player. Those two worlds also got in common another thing – being funny through being unpolite, arguing with each other for fun. People in both communities like to insult each other, which seems to be a specific kind of a game between people. So – the ballroom scene and the gaming society seem to be realities, that are a beautiful contrast to the real world – by becoming virtual, you finally start to become real. And You got to be real, darling! (Cheryl Lynn – “Got To
Be Real”).
• “Maserholz” (Polish premiere!) – the title, derived from the German term for a burl (*Maserholz*) refers to wood tissue with an irregular, chaotic grain pattern, which forms as a result of abnormal tree growth.
The structure of the composition draws inspiration from medical imaging techniques, such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound (USG), and PET/CT.
Psychologist and psychotherapist Klaudia Kornacka provided expert consultation during the creation of the piece.

Rafał Ryterski
Composer, activist, interdisciplinary artist, curator. Born in 1992 in Gdynia, Poland. The synthesis of various musical genres is a characteristic feature of his work, and Ryterski himself calls this practice genrebending. In recent years, this artist has also eagerly transcended the convention of music alone, creating interdisciplinary works at the intersection of performance and theater. His art thematically oscillates around the concept of identity, cultural phenomena characteristic of LGBTQ+ communities, and exposing mechanisms of violence.
Winner of the 70th International Rostrum of Composers for the piece “Totentanz” (2022), winner of the composition competition organized by the 33rd Zagreb Music Biennale (2025), and co-winner of the Pestka theater festival in 2024 (main prize and audience award) for the performance “Modlitwa pod cudowną mozaiką w kościele parafialnym pod wezwaniem samej siebie” (2024). Additionally, in 2021, he was nominated for the Paszport Polityki award in the classical music category for consistently introducing LGBTQ themes into Polish contemporary music.

Sensitive content: The works presented touch upon themes such as medical diagnostics, psychosomatic responses to stress, and the fluidity of identity.
Viewer warnings: The event will feature loud, unexpected sound effects, video projections with flickering imagery, and strobe effects.
